Glass Blocks Buying Guide
A builder's guide from the team at Venice Street Living — what glass blocks are, which type suits your project, how many you need, and how freight works when you order by the pallet.
1. Two families of glass block
We stock two distinct product families, and they're used differently:

2. How many blocks do you need?
Standard architectural blocks are 200×200×80mm, so one square metre of finished wall needs 25 blocks per m². The solid cast bricks (200×100×50mm) lay at approximately 100 per m² for a 100mm-thick wall.
- Measure your opening — height × width in metres = m².
- Wastage: add 5% for cuts and breakage. Glass cuts with a wet saw and diamond blade, not with a grinder.
- Panels over ~4m² need intermediate stiffeners or steel reinforcement every third course — our 80mm glass block spacer range handles alignment and mortar spacing.

3. Mortar & spacing
Lay hollow blocks with a quality white or off-white glass block mortar (never dark mortar — it reads through clear faces). Use our 80mm glass block spacers to hold a consistent 20mm joint and keep courses dead-level. Check local code for structural uses: panels carrying loads or in external walls need engineer sign-off in most Australian jurisdictions.
4. Freight: how pallets work
Glass is heavy and fragile — we pack and ship it properly:
- Blocks travel palletised and strapped — we don't parcel small quantities loose. The approximate freight estimator on every block product page scales with your quantity, from small orders by courier to full pallets by road freight.
- A typical pallet carries ~200 hollow blocks (approx 460kg). Order by the pallet for the best per-unit freight.
- Free forklift loading is available if you collect from our Gold Coast warehouse yard (14 Enterprise St, Molendinar QLD 4214) — yard pickup is $0 freight.
- Inspect on arrival. Note any damage on the delivery docket before signing, then email photos within 48 hours per our Shipping & Refund policies.
5. Design ideas from real jobs
- Bathroom light well: a 2×1m panel of hollow blocks above the vanity line — privacy without losing light.
- Feature splashback: solid crystal bricks behind a cooktop with LED edge lighting; they read like poured glass.
- Room divider: hollow blocks floor-to-ceiling with a timber reveal — the classic coastal Queenslander move.
